How can I be safe?
· Be aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable, leave where you are immediately.
· Walk with confidence. The more confident you look, the stronger you appear.
· Do not let drugs or alcohol cloud your judgment.
· Do not prop open self-locking doors.
· Lock your home/car doors and windows, even if you leave for just a few minutes. Always park in well-lit areas.
· Watch your keys. Do not lend them. Do not lose them. And do not put your name and address on the key ring.
· Watch out for unwanted visitors. Know who is on the other side of the door before you open it.
· Be wary of isolated spots, like underground garages, offices after business hours, and apartment laundry rooms.
· Avoid walking or jogging alone, especially at night! Vary your route.
· Have your key ready to use before you reach the door, home, car or work.
· Park in well-lit areas and lock the car. Always.
· Keep your car in good shape with plenty of gas in the tank.
· In case of car trouble, call for help on your cell phone. If you do not have a phone, put the hood up, lock the doors, and put a banner in the rear window that says, "Help. Call police."
· If at a party with people you do not know very well, do not leave your drink unattended or allow a stranger to bring you a drink.
· Learn how to defend yourself against an attacker by taking a self defense course.
· Do not leave clubs or parties alone or with someone you don't know very well.
· Never invite someone to your home on the first date, always meet in a crowded public place.
· Listen to what your friends say about who you are dating, if the person has a reputation for harming others it is likely they will harm you too.
