Questions & Answers
I’ve been assaulted what do I do?
1) Go to a safe place
Get away from the perpetrator. Go a trusted friend, family members home or even the hospital or police station. If the perpetrator is your spouse or family member and you are suffering on-going abuse try to leave during a time when they normally know you will be somewhere else without them. Like during the time you go to work or school.
2) Tell Someone
Tell a trusted friend or another adult, maybe a parent, a teacher, employer, doctor, or possibly your pastor. You may call the RAINN HOTLINE: 1-800-656-HOPE to have assistance finding a victim advocate who can provide you with moral support and direction during the process of reporting and recovery. EMPACT-SPC has a 24hr. Hotline dedicated to sexual assault that can also assist with this process. The number to call is 480-736-4949.
In the case that you would like to press charges, write down or have the person helping you to write down the location, events and make notes of what the perpetrator looked like.
If you are a child or young adult, service providers at
Childhelp can assist you. Please call 480-922-8212.
3) Seek Medical Attention
After the assault it is best to not wash your hands, shower, brush your teeth, or change clothes so the evidence can be saved. This may be difficult because the natural reaction is to want to be clean of the experience but remember to help stop the perpetrator from doing it again all the evidence needs to remain intact. Have someone there to go with you to the hospital and remember to bring an extra set of clothes. When you get to the hospital tell them in the emergency room why you are there. Rape victims have priority after life threatening circumstances, so you should not have to wait long. Ask to see a trained SANE nurse if one is available at the hospital. Make sure a rape kit is completed. If you suspect you where drugged make sure to tell the nurse. Everyone is entitled to a free forensic exam.
