Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse

Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse (Incest) is sexual contact between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal. According to statistics compiled by the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before they reach their 18th birthday. According to information in the document “Child Maltreatment 2005,” three-quarters of reported cases of child sexual abuse are committed by family members, or individuals considered part of the victim's ' trust circle '. Often what would be a one time occurrence from a stranger becomes a long-term relationship of abuse when it happens inside of a family.

When the abuser is someone in the family, the family may not be able to provide support or a sense of safety. Since the children (especially younger children) often have limited resources outside the family, it can be very hard for them to recover. It is not only the actions of the abusing parent but also the lack of action taken by non-abusing parent that damage the ability of the child to trust.

If you are facing a Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse situation please ask for help. It is not your fault!   No one deserves to be abused!

Childhelp is a child-friendly facility located in Scottsdale, where members of an investigative team interview, medically examine, provide and refer treatment for abused children while pursuing the prosecution of offenders.

Professionals at Child Protective Services are also trained to help you, please call 1-888-767-2445.
